Abstract

1523902 Ornithopters A B BIRD 30 Oct 1975 [21 Feb 1975] 7260/75 Headings B7G and B7W An ornithopter, in the embodiment manpowered, though it may be engine powered, comprises a wing designed to be flexible and attached to the body at a connection 8 and to a body-supported bracing strut 6 at a connection 5. The two connections provide nodes of oscillation when spanwise reciprocating motion is applied at an outboard portion of the wing through an offset connection 9 by a rod 10 actuated by arm and leg movements of the pilot through a link and lever connection 24, 25. The portion of the wing outboard of the connection 9 is mounted on the inner portion by a pivot 22 the axis of which as indicated by line 23 is offset from the spanwise axis of the wing whereby as the inner portion of the wing is flapped the outer portion is moved fore and aft to produce thrust for propulsion. The outer portion may be adjusted separately from handoperated twist grips 29 by cable control, not shown to function as an aileron. The wing portions may be constructed as torsion box shells but in the embodiment they comprise a square section flexible spar 4, 18 respectively to which partial and full ribs 2, 3 and 16, 17 are secured the whole being covered by a membrane 1 and 15 respectively. A tail unit 28 is carried by an outrigger structure 27.
