Abstract

1520495 Electrostatic charge reducing filter EXXON RESEARCH & ENG CO 4 Aug 1975 32430/75 Heading BID A coalescing filter 10 for separating water from hydrocarbon fuel has a holding chamber 18a in which 30% to 90% of the electrostatic charges present in the fuel are relaxed. Fuel enters at inlet 12 passes through (a) hydrophilic water coalescing filter(s) 14 and then through (a) filter(s) 16 which obstruct(s) the water. The water free fuel passes into a holding chamber 18a and may optionally be passed through a further holding chamber 18b upwardly via a pipe 18c and then downwardly through a pipe 18d (situated behind 18c) and thence to outlet 24. Water is drained away through an outlet 26. In Fig. 5 (not shown) the optional chamber 18b is not illustrated and a horizontal apparatus is drawn. Typical holding periods are for 8-20 secs. which reduces the electrostatic charge by 50%.
