Abstract

1515963 Cross-linked polymer of collagen and a mucopolysaccharide MASSACHUSETTS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY 8 July 1976 [15 July 1975] 28359/76 Heading C3H A cross-linked polymer of collagen and a mucopolysaccharide obtained by reacting collagen with the mucopolysaccharide and cross-linking the product is characterized in that the polymer is cross-linked to an Mc value of 800-60,000 and contains at least 0À5% by weight of said mucopolysaccharide irreversibly bound to said collagen. The polymer may be produced by dipping fibres, sheets, films and tubes made of collagen into a solution of mucopolysaccharide. The cross-linking may be achieved with a chemical cross-linking agent, e.g. glutaraldehyde, dehydrothermal crosslinking, or by radiation. The mucopolysaccharide is preferably chondroilin 6-sulphate, chondroitin 4-sulphate, heparin, keratan sulphate, heparan sulphate, dermatan sulphate or hyduronic acid. The cross-linked polymer may be formed into a suture or prosthesis.
