Abstract
1515577 Power supply systems; control of A.C. motors; inverters MASSACHUSETTS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY 16 Sept 1975 [16 Oct 1974] 37948/75 Headings H2H H2J and H2F A power supply unit 104A1 comprises N stages connected in cascade, each stage having a voltage source B1-1 and switches S1-1 to S4-1 which enable the potential at an output terminal B to be positive, negative or equal to the potential at an input terminal A, the voltage source in at least one of the stages consisting of an assembly of sources the interconnection of which may be changed to vary the output voltage and current of the unit. As shown, two power supply units 104A1, 104A2 are provided so that when one unit supplies power to a load 6 such as a dwelling, the voltage sources B1-1 to B1-N in the other unit are charged by a generator 3 driven by a windmill 9. The voltage sources may be batteries, solar cells, capacitors, fuel cells or thermoelectric devices. The switches in each stage may be transistors or thyristors and are controlled by respective controllers PUC 1-1 to PUO 1-N which are in turn controlled by a master controller 2 connected to receive signals from the generator 3, The controllers enable the power supply units to provide a stepped alternating voltage of variable amplitude and frequency and which approximates a sine wave. In a power supply for a single- or three-phase motor of a vehicle, three sets of power supply units 104A1, 104A2 provide variable frequency and variable voltage to the motor, Figs. 8, 9 (not shown). The frequency and voltage variation for changing the speed of the motor is effected by the vehicle accelerator which sends signals to a master controller which in turn supplies control signals to the switches in the power supply units.
