Abstract
1514977 Detecting oil in water STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd 2 Dec 1975 49407/75 Heading G1A The presence of oil in water is detected, and its concentration measured by monitoring the amount of light emerging from a transparent silica prism having one or more surfaces in contact with the water. The prism may have various shapes, in those of Figs. 1 and 2, the input and output beams passing through the same end of the prism. The prism of Fig. 3 has a square or rectangular cross-section. The material chosen for the prism is silica having a refractive index similar to that of oil such that when this is present, light leaks out from the prism, being internally reflected to lesser degree than with pure water. The source of light is a monochromatic gallium arsenide or gallium aluminium arsenide laser; the detector a silicon PIN diode. Optical fibres lead light to and from the prism.
