Abstract

1507147 Waveguide multiplexing junctions MARCONI CO Ltd 28 July 1975 [26 Sept 1974] 41817/74 Heading H1W A multiplexing circuit, e.g. for television channels in a satellite, comprises a circular waveguide 14 short-circuited at one end 9 and coupled to orthogonal pairs of rectangular waveguides 10, 12; 11, 13, &c. each arranged at such axial distance from the short-circuit 9 that the latter appears to be an open circuit at the frequency of the respective carrier signal. In the twochannel system shown, a carrier C1 is coupled through waveguide 10 to the waveguide 14 and excites it in the TE11 mode. Waveguide 10 is spaced from short-circuit 9 by one quarterwavelength at the appropriate frequency. A further carrier C2 is coupled through waveguide 11 to the waveguide and also excites it in the TE11 mode. Waveguide 11 is spaced from the short-circuit 9 by three quarter-wavelengths at the appropriate frequency. Both carriers propagate towards the output 14. Waveguides 12, 13 are arranged in the same transverse planes as waveguides 10, 11 respectively and are connected to stand-by transmitters for respective channels C1 and C2. They excite the waveguide 14 in a TE11 mode orthogonal to the mode excited by waveguides 10, 11. Waveguides 11 and 13 contain band-stop filters for preventing transmission of the carrier C1. The output 14 is connected to an antenna capable of transmitting both polarizations.
