Abstract

1505712 Electrophonic musical instruments LELAND STANFORD JUNIOR UNIVERSITY BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF 14 March 1975 [26 March 1974] 10725/75 Heading G5J A method of synthetizing musical sounds, particularly transient musical sounds comprises the steps of frequency modulating an audio frequency carrier wave by an audio frequency modulation wave, and transducing the resultant frequency-modulated wave. The degree of frequency modulation and hence the sound spectrum of the resultant wave is controlled by a modulation index function which varies with time during the playing of a sound. Preferably two audio-frequency carrier waves are frequency modulated each by a respective audio frequency wave according to a respective modulation index function to generate the resultant wave. The resultant wave is amplitude modulated to give attack, sustain and decay portions thereto before voicing thereof. Apparatus for effecting the method is described, Fig. 5.
