Abstract

1499602 Hard facing articles using a laser beam CATERPILLAR TRACTOR CO 14 Sept 1976 [22 Dec 1975] 38053/76 Heading C7F [Also in Divisions B1-2] Metal articles, e.g. of gray iron, are coated with a wear resistant powder, e.g. chromium boride or tungsten carbide, and a powdered solid of lower melting point, e.g. stainless steel powder, the powders and a surface layer of the article being melted by a focused laser beam. In one embodiment wear resistant particles 20 and powder 22 are deposited on gray iron plate 14 by means of gravity feed tube 24. Relative motion between tube 24 and article 14 causes smoothing of the powder by Burer surface 26 of the tube. Laser beam 28 melts powder 22 and a limited surface portion of article 16 in zone 32 thus providing a melt 36 in which wear resistant particles 20 are suspended. The laser beam 28 is subsequently removed so that melt 36 forms matrix 38.
