Abstract

1494103 Luminescent compositions and uses thereof POST OFFICE 21 Jan 1975 [25 Jan 1974] 26556/77 Divided out of 1494102 Heading C4 A surface is rendered phosphorescent by applying thereto and curing in situ a solution containing a phosphorescent activator and a soluble precondensate which is capable of forming an insoluble condensate which does not absorb UV radiation at any wavelength at which the phosphorescent activator does, and which is capable of forming an insoluble condensate in the presence of the phosphorescent activator, in the amount used, which is phosphorescent. The preferred solutions are those claimed in parent Specification, viz., using aminoplast precondensates, particularly urea-or melamine-formaldehyde precondensates, and having a pH of 6-9À5. They preferably contain up to 20 vol. per cent of a C 1 -4 alcohol and a sodium carbonate or borate buffer, and have a water-tolerance of 2À0-2À5 ml./ml. Suitable phosphorescent materials are carbazole sulphonic acid, p-aminobenzophenone, alpha-naphthoflavone, 8- amino-1-naphthol-3:6-disulphonic acid, 2-naphthylamine-6-sulphonic acid, p-aminobenzoic acid, terephthalic acid, fluorene sulphonic acid, diphenylene oxide sulphonic acid and 4,4'-dihydroxydiphenyl sulphonic acid. Activators are exemplified. In the examples melamine-formaldehyde solutions of M:F molar ratios approx. 1À3:1 and 1:3 are prepared and mixed with about 2 p.h.r. of sodium carbazole sulphonate or sodium or calcium p-aminobenzoate. The solutions are diluted and used to render paper phosphorescent. Coding applications such as for postage stamps and printing inks such as for jet printers are disclosed.
