Abstract

1488660 Security documents EMI Ltd 23 Dec 1974 [24 Oct 1973] 49549/73 Heading B6A A security document, which may be a banknote, bears material which exhibits a distinct change of a magnetic property when its temperature is changed through a specific temperature or range of temperature within the limits -10‹ to +80‹ C. The temperature or range may be the Curie point and be above ambient temperature (0‹ to 30‹ C.), e.g. in the region of 45‹ C. In this case the material may be MnAs, Ni-Fe alloys or Ni-Cu alloys, in the form of acicular powder, in a binder and solvent, applied at ambient temperature to a tape support. The powder is magnetically oriented before the solvent is driven off, thereby fixing the orientation. The tape is then laminated to the document substrate. The tape support may be dispensed with. Alternatively the Curie point of the material, e.g. Mn 2 Sn, FeS 2 , FeBe 5 , or Ni alloys incorporating Al, Cr, Si or V, is below ambient temperature, e.g. in the region of 0‹ C., the acicular powder being oriented below the Curie point if such orientation is required. In other forms, the material is deposited by vacuum evaporation on to a magnetically coded substrate thereby taking up the orientations of the coded substrate, or is deposited in dots or the like of printing ink, e.g. applied to a banknote. Upon heating above the Curie point the orientation becomes indistinguishable, magnetization is lost or remanence changes.
