Abstract

1487173 Applying adhesive tape to bag necks UNILEVER Ltd 11 Oct 1974 [18 July 1973] 34322/73 Headings B8C and B8F A device for sealing the necks of bags with adhesive tape comprises means 10-16 to gather the neck of a bag, means 17 to feed the gathered neck against a stretch of tape partly to encircle the neck with the tape, and a rotary gripper 23 which on further movement of the neck completes the encircling and includes a tape cutting knife 25. The gathering means comprise upper and lower belts 10, 11 which feed a bag neck against spring loaded hooks 16. The pressure of the upper belts 10 is increased during the latter stage of the gathering by a cam 14. A pair of hooks 17, one of a succession of pairs of hooks on a series of cam operated arms, completes the gathering and feeds the neck against the tape adhering to a plate 20 and having a strip 9 of paper connected to its end. Further movement of the hooks feeds the neck into a cavity 22 of the gripper 23 causing the gripper to rotate against a spring bias. After the neck is encircled by the tape the free end of the tape and the strip 9 are applied to the opposing portion of the tape and the knife 25 severs the opposing portion and strip leaving a piece of the strip connected to both ends of the tape around the neck. The tape is supplied from a reel 1 and passes over a spring loaded roller 6 which on exhaustion of the tape on the reel 1 flies up to apply the tape end to the end of a new tape from a reserve reel 4.
