Abstract

1486968 Two-part couplings A G HERNANDEZ 1 July 1975 [2 July 1974] 27661/75 Heading H2E A socket has a switch 18 which isolates at least one socket contact 20 from the mains supply when there is no mating plug connected, and a shutter 9 mechanically interlocked with the switch and covering the socket contacts, such that the switch cannot be actuated to connect said at least one contact 20 to the supply until after the shutter has been moved clear of the contacts. The socket comprises a body piece 8 with apertures 3<SP>1</SP> through which plug pins enter to connect with socket contacts. The apertures are shown closed by wedge-shape extensions 13, 14 of the shutter 9 which is slidable upwardly against a spring 10 and within a recess (15, Fig. 4, not shown) in the piece 8. The shutter has a recess 22 into which engages a projection 23 of a push-button 5 mounted in a cavity 17 for movement at right angles to that of the shutter against a resilient portion 25 of the switch; however the button cannot move while the projection 23 is engaged in the recess 22. The shutter is able to turn slightly, Fig. 6, not shown, within the recess (15); thus if there is an attempt to raise the shutter by application of an object through one aperture 3<SP>1</SP>, the shutter will turn and not release the push-button. Insertion of a plug raises the shutter clearing the recess 22 from the projection 23, and then depresses the pushbutton causing the portion 25 to move switch contact 26 into connection with switch contact 21 and thus energize the socket contact 20.
