1484496 Wet separation of solids RAF FINERIE TIRLEMONTOISE SA 14 Oct 1974 [12 Nov 1973] 44437/74 Heading B2H A trough in which beets &c are conveyed in a current of liquid is provided with an apparatus for separating foreign matter, e.g. stones and sand, from the beets and comprising, at a break in the trough, a tank 5 connected respectively to an upstream portion 6 and to a downstream portion 7 of the trough, a rotatable wheel 1 with compartments 2 distributed over its inner circumferential surface arranged in the tanks, means 11 for supplying the compartments when at a lower level during the wheel rotation, with a rising liquid stream, said means being located on the upstream side of the wheel and adjacent the lower part of the wheel, and each compartment being provided with a liquid outlet passage 20, whereby foreign matter will fall into the compartments when the latter, during rotation of the wheel, are at the wheel lower level, whereas the beets &c will remain in suspension in the liquid within the wheel and will be discharged with the liquid from the wheel into the downstream portion 7 of the trough and a device 13 for collecting the foreign matter and discharging it from the wheel, the device being arranged underneath those compartments 2 which during rotation of the wheel are at the wheel upper level. The wheel 1 is integral with a perforated drum 3 and the assembly is mounted on a shaft 4 driven by a motor-transmission unit 9. The compartments 2 open on that side 10 of the wheel facing the upstream portion 6 of the trough and are defined by the spaces between partitions 14 which extend from one edge 16 of the wheel to an annular wall 17 at the other edge of the wheel. The device 13 for discharging foreign matter comprises a hopper 21 which supplies a chute 22. The beets and water discharging from the wheel flow through the drum 3, the water passing through the perforations in the tank 5 from which it is recycled into the wheel via a hopper 23, a pipe 24, a variable-speed pump 25 and the means 11, the latter comprising one or two diffusers 26, 27 which open through a ring-like wall 32 adjacent the wheel edge 16. The wall 32 has a shoulder 33 which deflects the water stream from the diffusers towards the outlet passage warp 20 of the wheel compartments 2.
