Abstract

1484153 Hydrocarbon emulsions TEXACO DEVELOPMENT CORP 11 Nov 1974 [3 Dec 1973] 48621/74 Heading B1V [Also in Division El] Oil is recovered from a subterranean reservoir by injecting a dispersion comprising (a) a hydrocarbon, (b) an aqueous liquid containing 500-10,000 ppm of polyvalent cations, and (c) a surfactant composition having a water soluble salt of an alkyl or alkylaryl sulphonate having the formula: in which R is a linear or branched alkyl radical having 5-25 carbon atoms, X is a sulphonate radical, and Y<SP>+</SP> is a monovalent cation, and a polyoxyalkylated alcohol or polyoxylated alkyl phenol having the formula: in which R' is a linear or branched alkyl radical having 5-20 carbon atoms and n is a number from 3-20. Preferably Y<SP>+</SP> is a sodium, potassium or ammonium ion, and the hydrocarbon is crude oil, a side cut from a crude column overhead, gas oil, kerosene, heavy naptha, straight run gasoline, liquified petroleum gas or a light hydrocarbon having 1-6 carbon atoms. The dispersion may comprise 1-90% by weight of the hydrocarbon and 99-10% by weight of aqueous liquid and surfactant, each surfactant being in an amount of 0.05-5% by weight, based on aqueous liquid. The dispersion may also contain 100-5000 ppm of a hydrophilic polymer. The dispersion, which may contain a gas, may be preceded by a preflush containing a sacrificial agent and a hydrophilic polymer, and may be followed by a driving fluid.
