Abstract

1477643 Heart valves NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 16 Oct 1974 [24 Oct 1973] 49570/73 Heading A5R [Also, in Division F2] An atrio-veritricular prosthetic cardiac valve comprises three lobes 7, each of which provides internally a hollow 8 and externally a smooth surface convex in both the axial and circumferential directions, and three cusps 12 sealed to the lobes. When the valve is open the cusps are deformed outwardly towards the inner walls of the lobes and their edges take up a position shown at 13' leaving a gap 14. Flow of blood through the valve forms a vortex within each lobe which assists in the closing of the valve in which position the cusps lie against each other. The valve is made of silicone or segmented polyurethane rubber and polyethylene phthalate fabric. A suture ring is provided made of "terylene" velour. The valve may have one, two, three or more lobes and cusps.
