Abstract

1470562 Embossed card readers SHARP KK 2 April 1974 14676/74 Heading G4R A machine for reading characters embossed on a card includes a reading head comprising a baffle plate 24 with two slits 241, 242. Light is directed through one of the slits and is reflected by the card. Dependent upon whether or not the incident light falls on an embossed part the reflected light passes or does not pass through the other slit. Light passing through the second slit falls on a photosensor array 22. As disclosed the slits have a length greater than the height of the characters, which are in stylized form. The photosensor array is a line of phototransistors which are enabled sequentially during movement of the record beneath the baffle. When a card is inserted into a guide in the machine its leading edge is sensed by a first photosensor so that a drive motor is started. The motor moves the card beneath the reading head. When the trailing edge of the card passes the first photosensor the drive is reversed so that the card is returned towards its insertion point. When the now trailing edge passes the first photosensor the motor is stopped and the card may be withdrawn. A second photosensor, on the opposite side of the reading head from the first, prevents the motor from being stopped when the end of the card passes the first photosensor in the forward direction. The signals from the reading head pass to recognition means, not described. Recognition takes place during both forward and reverse movement of the card and reading is deemed to be correct only if the recognition is the same in both directions.
