Abstract

1467963 Controlling light PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 18 April 1974 [20 April 1973] 17052/74 Addition to 1160923 Heading G2F In a projection system wherein light from a source 22 is directed by a polarization dependent beam-splitter 124 through a variably birefringent electro-optic target 13 of a cathode ray tube 14 and is reflected back through the target to the splitter 124 so that an electrical charge pattern laid down on the target is converted into spatial intensity variations in that portion of the light directed by the beam-splitter towards a screen 127, a projection objective is provided which consists of parts 125 and 126, part 125 acting as a collimator for light incident on the target and determining the power of the objective, and part 126 being disposed after the splitter and correcting for optical errors introduced by part 125. By this means all the components of part 125 may be of the same material, with a small coefficient of expansion, e.g. SiO 2 , whereby mechanical stress introduced by the heating effect of the light beam do not give rise to appreciable changes in the polarization of transmitted light. Part 126 corrects for colour aberrations and may consist of two crown and flint lens combinations. Since it occurs after the splitter 124, stress induced birefringence is unimportant. It may form a non-focal combination with a magnification of substantially unity. As particularly described beam-splitter 124 is a Wollaston prism and the target is of KDP. In a second embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), three tubes 14 are provided for respective primary colour images, dichroic mirrors being provided one between the part 125 and the tube 14 of Fig. 1, and one between part 125 and the splitter 124 for the two respective additional tubes. A further optical element, equivalent in function to part 125 is disposed between the latter dichroic mirror and its tube.
