Abstract
1465979 Coated seeds FRUITGROWER CHEMICAL CO Ltd 28 Feb 1974 [2 March 1973] 9096/74 Addition to 1299378 Heading A2Q Seeds coated with an inert absorbent powder are prepared by (a) mixing the seeds with a biologically inert adhesive, (b) treating the inert absorbent powder with a liquid so as to at least partly satisfy its absorbency, (c) adding the powder to the mixture of seed and adhesive so as to provide an adhesive-bonded powder coating on the seeds and (d) removing absorbed liquid from the powder to restore its original absorbency. Seeds specified include swede and carrot seeds. The adhesive may be carboxymethyl cellulose, gum arabic or sodium alginate. The absorbent powder may be a clay, a modified diatomaceous earth of increased absorbency, a fertilizer, china clay, peat or dolomite. The liquid may be water. In Example 1 two consecutive coats of powder are applied, both coatings being dried together. The treated seed may be impregnated with a liquid agricultural chemical, e.g. a plant growth regulant, fungicide, insecticide, nematocide, acaricide, trichloronate or Bacillus subtilis bacteria in a nutrient broth.
