Abstract

1465682 Surgical needle support EVERETT MEDICAL PRODUCTS Ltd 19 July 1974 [20 July 1973 2 May 1974] 34720/73 and 19258/74 Heading A5R A cannula insertion and retention assembly comprises a cannula 1 with laterally extending wings 6 having attached thereto by tongues 21 a flexible sheet 8 with one surface 9 coated with pressure sensitive adhesive and a barrier sheet 9 such that the wings and sheet may be folded longitudinally along fold sections 13 and gaps 14 to form a handle to aid insertion of the cannula; after insertion the barrier sheet is removed and the flexible sheet folded transversely along lines 20 to cover the wings and cannula insertion point and hold the cannula firmly in position, the tip of the cannula being indicated by notch 28. The cannula may be metal and have a cover 4 or flexible plastics with removable introducer needle (Fig. 7 not shown). The tubing 2 has a Luer mount at its end remote from the cannula and is closed at this end by a captive plug 11 held by a flexible strip 12 or it may be attached to a container for supplying or receiving liquids. The tongues 21 with holes 30 and cannula are sandwiched between two strips of plastic which are then welded through holes 30 which may also be cut away sections. The surfaces of the wings which are placed in contact for insertion of the cannula may be roughened or have ribs to prevent relative movement. The flexible sheet may be pear shaped and have an area adjacent its free end without adhesive to facilitate removal of the barrier sheet, a hole being provided to indicate the location of the cannula tip 3.
