Abstract
1465298 Linear particle accelerators W E DRUMMOND 21 June 1974 [25 June 1973] 27656/74 Heading H1D In a linear travelling-wave ion accelerator which employs conductive acceleration-i.e. the attraction of a dense electron cloud to accelerate the ions when it itself is accelerated, thereby providing a higher electric field than could be provided by an external source, and avoiding arcing problems-injected ions are trapped by the lower branch cyclotron wave of the beam, the phase velocity of which is increased from a low value to a value close to that of light by establishing within an evacuated waveguide 16 along the axis of which the beam is projected an axial magnetic field which decreases from the entry to the exit of the guide. As described, the ions are injected at a velocity equal to the local phase velocity of the wave, the steady reduction in magnetic field being achieved by steadily increased spacing of coils 20, the waveguide flowing out towards its exit end to allow for the consequent radial spreading of the beam, which is preferably relativistic. Reference is made to the possibility of operating the accelerator in the presence of a gas or plasma to permit a higher electron beam current.
