Abstract
1465106 Microwave oven AMANA REFRIGERATION Inc 1 May 1974 [2 May 1973] 19130/74 Heading H5H A microwave oven has a microwave seal structure 58 defined between the conductive wall 23 of the access opening and a conducting frame 49 secured to the door assembly 43, a peripherally extending flange 48 carried by the door assembly 43 and positioned between the frame 49 and wall 23 being provided with a plurality of alternating conductive members 69, 70 which extend to different extents in the direction of microwave energy leakage so that the choke cavity 61 will suppress microwaves of more than one frequency. The distance from a short circuiting wall surface 63 of choke cavity 61 to the origin of energy escaping through gap 60 is #/2 at the main operating frequency of the oven so that a short circuit is reflected at gap 60 and a high series reactance is provided at choke opening 62. By castellating flange 48 at 69, 70 as shown, harmonics or spurious sideband frequencies may be suppressed as well as the main frequency. This construction also obviates detuning of the choke as the result of normal wear and tear on the oven and due to slight opening of the oven door. Dielectric material 66, e.g. polystyrene or polythene fills the choke cavity 61 and the transmission path 59. Secondary radiation absorption bodies 67, 68 comprising rubber or plastics loaded with carbon derivatives or ferrites are provided between the door and access opening. The oven door has a perforated metal plate 46, 47 covered by a transparent window 52. The usual mode stirrer, timers and safety interlock switches are provided. In Fig. 6, not shown, the flange 48 has castellations of three different sizes in the direction of energy escape to suppress three frequencies of radiation. In Fig. 6A (not shown) the castellations suppress fundamental and second harmonic frequencies, the width and dimension in the direction of energy escape of the second harmonic castellations being half that of the fundamental frequency castellations. In Figs. 9 and 6B (not shown), different length castellations are separated by slots which inhibit the propagation of higher order peripheral modes, as in U.K. Specification 1,417,156 (Raytheon Co.).
