Abstract
1462766 Making cams LUCAS ELECTRICAL Ltd 1 May 1974 [25 July 1973] 35428/73 Heading B3A [Also in Divisions C7 and F2] The contact breaker cam 11 of an I.C. engine is of a sintered iron composition containing by weight up to 0À25% carbon and is secured by a spigot 14 to a drive plate 12 by a hot riveting operation which flows the spigot 14 to produce a securing flange 15. The spigot 14 is of non- circular cross-section and extends through a correspondingly shaped hole in the plate 12 whereby a good drive connection therebetween is ensured, and the hot riveting operation is carried out by a pair of electrodes (not shown) engaged one at each end of the cam 11 with the plate 12 in situ on the spigot 14. Preferably the cam has a composition by weight: copper 1À50 to 3À50%, carbon 0À14%, other elements up to 2À00%, iron balance. The sintered cam 11 may be impregnated with lubricant thus providing inherent lubrication of the cam surface and of an internal bore 13 of the cam and shaft (not shown) which supports the cam and about which the cam oscillates, in use, during operation of the automatic advance mechanism of the contact breaker unit.
