Abstract

1444432 Syringes SGE RESEARCH PTY Ltd 20 Sept 1973 [22 Sept 1972] 44158/73 Heading F1R [Also in Division A5] A syringe comprises a barrel 12 having a main bore 13 therein a plunger guider 42 having a plunger 31 secured thereto and communicating with a needle receiving bore 30 removably holding a needle 23, the needle closely receiving a lower portion of the plunger therein, a resilient annular seal 40 between the needle and a shoulder 43 at the inner end of bore 30, through which seal the plunger is adapted to move, and a threaded, apertured nut 27 adapted to engage a threaded collar 18 on the needle end of the barrel with the needle extending through the nut aperture, a spring 28 acting between the nut and a shoulder 26 on the needle to resiliently urge the needle into engagement with the syringe. The syringe may be provided with a repetitive delivery device comprising a stop 54 adjustably clamped to the barrel, a rod 48 extending parallel to the main bore axis and passing through a hole 47 in the stop, one end of the rod releasably engaging in a hole 51 in a finger piece 52 of the plunger, and a shoulder 53 on the other end of the rod to limit outward movement of the rod relative to the stop and thereby of the plunger. Alternatively, the stop may be fixed to the barrel and the shoulder 53 may be adjustable along the rod. The entering end (61), Fig. 4, (not shown) of the needle may be of reduced diameter or a tube of smaller external diameter than the needle may be inserted and permanently secured within a terminal region of the needle to define a proboscis thereof. The upper end of the plunger may be of greater diameter than the lower end thereof. In a further embodiment, a sleeve (33), Fig. 1, (not shown), is provided secured to the finger piece and slidable along the main bore with the plunger, engagement of said tube with the inner end of said bore limiting inward movement of the plunger. A plunger guide tube (21) extends around the plunger within sleeve (33) into the needle receiving bore where it forms a shoulder (22) on which the seal seats. Graduations are marked on the barrel to indicate, in conjunction with the sleeve (33) or plunger guide 42, delivered quantities of liquid. The syringe is stated to be suitable for use in gas chromatography, for medical injections and for laboratory work.
