Abstract

1442527 Filled polyolefin compositions SUMITOMO CHEMICAL CO Ltd 30 May 1974 [4 June 1973] 24085/74 Heading C3P Reinforced polyolefin compositions are prepared by reacting together (1) a mixture of (a) a molten crystalline polyolefin, (b) 0À1 to 10% by weight of (a) of an unsaturated aliphatic carboxylic acid or anhydride and (c) either (i) 0À2 to 80% by weight of (a) of an oxide or sulphate of a Group II(a), III(b) or IV(a) metal or (ii) 0À1 to 20% by weight of (a) of a hydroxide of magnesium, calcium, titanium or zirconium, and mixing with (2) a filler before or after the reaction, said reaction being performed in the absence of a free radical catalyst. A further crystalline or non-crystalline polyolefin may also be incorporated. The polyolefin may be polyethylene, polypropylene, polybutene-1 or an ethylene/propylene or ethylene/butene copolymer. The modifiers may be (b) maleic, fumaric, itaconic, citraconic or acrylic acid or maleic, itaconic or citraconic anhydride, (c)(i) magnesium, calcium, aluminium or titanium oxide or magnesium or calcium sulphate, and (c)(ii) magnesium, calcium or zirconium hydroxide or orthotitanic acid. The filler may be glass fibres, natural and synthetic organic and inorganic fibres, and metals or metal compounds. The further polymer may be a polymer or copolymer of ethylene, propylene, butene-1,4-methyl pentene-1 or styrene. The compositions may be used for making laminates and composite bodies with metals, wood, glass, asbestos, polyolefins and polystyrene. Many examples are given in which the polyolefin is polyethylene or polypropylene and the filler is glass fibres, aluminium powder, iron powder, talc, asbestos, alumina or nylon fibres.
