Abstract

1442418 Cleaning fabrics PROCTER & GAMBLE CO 13 Dec 1973 [14 Dec 1972] 57770/73 Heading D1P Oily soils and stains are removed from a polyester-containing fabric by the steps of (a) soaking the fabric in an aqueous bath containing 1-50 ppm of a lipase enzyme in the presence of calcium and/or magnesium ions in the solution and (b) thereafter washing the fabric with an aqueous detergent or soap composition. The soaking step is carried out preferably for 1-20 hours at a temperature 40‹-160‹F, and a pH of 5-11. The soaking solution may further contain a built detergent and a buffer (e.g. borate/boric acid) but soaking is preferably carried out in the absence of sequestering agents and soaps. Soaking may be accompanied by agitation. The washing step may be carried out in the presence of sequestering agents and with initial and final rinsing steps. The lipase may be of plant, animal or microbiological origin. The ions may be provided by calcium chloride, nitrate, sulphate or phosphate or the corresponding magnesium salt. The fabric may be polyester or polyester/cotton, the polyester preferably being polyethylene terephthalate.
