Abstract

1434046 Graphite whiskers KUREHA KAGAKU KOGYO KK and TOYO BOSEKI KK 24 July 1973 [27 July 1972] 35241/73 Heading C1A Graphite whiskers are made by vaporizing 1 part by volume of a liquid organic feed having a condensed polycyclic structure of 2 to 5 benzene rings which is then mixed with 500- 5000 parts by volume of a carrier gas which does not react with the organic compounds and 0À1-5 parts by vol. of an active gas containing a chemically bonded oxygen atom and passed to a furnace at 700-1200‹ C., containing a heat resistant substrate on which are deposited carbon nuclei which grow to form carbon fibres around the carbon nuclei which are then graphitized in a furnace at 2700 to 3000‹ C. for 1 sec. to 10 mins. in an atmosphere of an inert gas. The whiskers may be formed in two steps in which the carbon nuclei are deposited at 700 -890‹ C. and the whiskers grown at 900‹ to 1200‹ C., the active gas being steam, CO or CO 2 . Specified polycyclic starting compounds are anthracene, phenanthrene, chrysene, fluoranthene or pyrene, or a desulphurized fraction of crude petroleum oil, coal tar or anthracene oil. The carrier gas may be argon, hydrogen or nitrogen and the inert graphitizing atmosphere may argon or nitrogen.
