Abstract

1431269 Detecting gas leaks A M G ZUURBIER Ltd T J BIRD and T A JONES 27 Nov 1973 [28 Nov 1972] 54927/72 Heading G1A In a gas leak (methane) detector for fitting in a van employing a laser 1 transmitting at 3.3 microns, air is passed via a funnel 13, filter unit 14, pump 15, flow control 16 and through a sample chamber 7 adjacent the laser 1 (or through the optical cavity of the laser). A photo voltaic detector 10 is able to detect any reduction of the laser beam's intensity due to the presence of methane which absorbs radiation at 3.3 microns. The detector's output is amplified (18) and filtered, 19 or 20, before being fed to a pen recorder 26, a meter 25 and an alarm trigger circuit 27. The temperature of the detector is stabilized by means of a Peltier cooling device 21 and an associated thermistor 22 and control circuit 23, the cooling current being shown on a meter 24.
