Abstract
143,120. Johnson, P. G. Sept. 16, 1919. Toothed gearing. - Cyclic variations in the speed of a rotating body are produced by an arrangement of gearing and cams. Two gear-wheels are fixed on a shaft a, the one b being of the helical type, and the other c being preferably of the spur type. A pair of corresponding pinions d, f having cams h, h formed on or attached to them, are carried by the driving-shaft e, the pinion d being slidably mounted on a spline d', and the pinion f being free. The ratio of the helical gear being different from that of the other gear, the pinions rotate at different speeds, causing a cyclic lateral movement of the pinion d and consequent variations in the speed of the shaft a. Alternatively, the pinions may be keyed on shaft e, the shaft a carrying the sliding helical wheel and its attached cam, and the other wheel being free. A spring may be used to assist the return lateral movement of the pinion d.
