Abstract
1429336 Gas cooling installations; boilers SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ BV 15 May 1973 22971/73 Headings F4S and F4A In a heat exchanger for cooling hot gases comprising a tube plate 11 separating a refractory lined gas distribution chamber 1 from a cooling chamber 2 and wherein the gases to be cooled are passed through a plurality of helical tubes 12 connected to said plate 11, the surface of said tube plate 11 facing said gas distribution chamber, together with the inner surfaces of said tubes 12 in the region 22 where they are connected by welding to said tube plate, are clad with refractory material. As shown the tube plate 11 is clad with a thin layer 13 of compressible refractory material, e.g. ceramic fibre wool, and a thick layer 14 of non- compressible material. The tubes 12 are each provided inth a refractory cylindrical insert 19 with a thin layer of highly insulating material 21 located between the inner surface of the tube and the insert 19. Coolant, e.g. water, enters the cooling chamber 2 through inlet 9 and leaves by way of outlet 10. The heat exchanger is suitable for use as a waste heat boiler for cooling hot gases produced by the partial combustion of hydrocarbons and simultaneously generating steam.
