1425075 Honing J GRAMMLICH 12 Dec 1973 [13 Dec 1972] 57467/73 Heading B3D Apparatus for controlling the stroke of a honing head 2 of a honing machine comprises a rod for movement with the honing head, two limit switches 27, 32 for determining the end limits of the honing stroke, two regulating members 25, 30 respectively associated with the two limit switches, two actuation members 82, 84 respectively associated with the two limit switches, two positioning members 34, 35 for respective independent adjustment of the regulating members to adjust the relative displacement between the limit switches and respective actuation members, and a coupling mechanism 66 for connecting the positioning members together to provide for joint adjustment of the regulating members. The honing head 2 is displaceable along slides 3, 4 by fluid-operated devices 5, 6 and is connected to the rod 8 which is hollow and extends into a housing 9 of a control apparatus. A lower part of the rod slides on a guide rod 11 fixed to the base of the housing. A further pair of guide rods 21, 22 extend between the top and bottom of the housing and slidably receive respective regulating members 25, 30. Member25 has a support 26 which engages rails 27a on the wall of the housing, and a projecting wall on the support mounts a pair of limit switches 27, 28, switch limiting the downward stroke of the honing head and switch 28 controlling auxiliary drives of the machine. The regulating member 30 mounts a limit switch 30 controlling the upward stroke of the head. Each regulating member 25, 30 is connected to a respective positioning member in the form of an endless chain 34, 35 running over upper sprockets 36, 37 and lower sprockets 38, 39 rotatable on shafts 40, 43 mounted in the housing. Chain 34 also runs over sprockets 49, 51 on respective shafts 63, 53, sprockets 9 being rotatably secured to shaft 63 but sprocket 51 being rotatable on shaft 53. Chain 35 also runs over a sprocket 50 rotatable on shaft 63 and a sprocket 52 rotatably secured to shaft 53. Each shaft 53, 63 has a respective handle 58, 74 whereby the chains can be selectively moved to adjust the associated regulating member and switch 27, 28 or 32. A further chain 76 runs over a sprocket 61 fast with shaft 53 and a sprocket 66 rotatable on shaft 63. The sprocket abuts a member 68 fast with shaft 63 and when a clamp 72 is tightened the sprocket 66 is clamped to shaft 63 so that rotation of either handle 58, 74 adjusts both regulating members in unison whereby the switches are adjusted to vary the position of the stroke of the head but not its length. The switches are actuated, without contact, by lugs 82, 83, 84 of magnetic material carried by a non-magnetic holder 81 adjustably mounted on the rod 8. A further switch (92, Fig. 4, not shown) is actuated by the lug holder to prevent excess upward movement of the head 2. Actuation of the limit switches produces pulses which are transmitted to control means for the machine, switches 27, 32 also operating indicator lamps.
