Abstract
1423540 Spark gaps TAIYO YUDEN KK 17 July 1973 [18 July 1972] 34082/73 Heading H1X [Also in Division H2] An electrical connector e.g. a CRT socket comprises a two-part insulative body 1, 4 Figs. 4, 5, housing connection terminals 2, an earth terminal 6, 7 and conductors 5 each spaced from a portion 7 of the earth terminal to define a discharge gap 13 between a connection terminal 2 and the earth terminal 6, 7 for over-voltage protection of the connection terminal 2. Each connection terminal 2 comprises a terminal element (e.g. for engaging a CRT pin) housed in a first insulative plate 1 and a leg portion projecting parallel to the connection axis from the periphery of the plate 1. A metal frame C, Fig. 9, embedded in a second insulative plate 4 attached to the first plate 1 has conductors 5 each in contact with a contiguous leg portion 2. Discharge gaps 13 are formed by cutting an annular groove 12 of accuratelycontrolled width in the exposed face of the second plate 4, so cutting through the conductors 5 but leaving intact the upset conductor 6, Fig. 5, 6 serve as an earth terminal for the ring 7. In another embodiment Fig. 10 (Fig. 12 not shown), the second plate 4, embedding a metal frame (C) having an earth conductor (6) without an upset portion, is provided with apertures 12a each corresponding to a required discharge gap 13, which gap is formed by cutting or punching a piece out of a conductor 5 through the aperture 12a. Terminals 2 may be arranged in an irregular pattern; and an index lug 11 may project into central holes 3, 9 in the plates 1, 4.
