Abstract
1415520 Digital television picture transmission BRITISH BROADCASTING CORP 20 March 1974 [23 Feb 1973 9 Nov 1973] 9027/73 and 52184/73 Addition to 1289015 Headings H4P and H4F In an arrangement as disclosed in parent Specification 1,289,015 where for example in a digital television picture transmission a coded equivalent signal of each picture point is compared with the previous coded equivalent and a coarse or fine adjusting signal is transmitted dependent on the difference, the arrangement is modified so that comparison is made with a combination of more than one previous equivalent signals, the combination being in any desired proportion. In one embodiment, information corresponding to odd samples is used during odd pictures and correspondingly with even samples/even pictures. Rapid movement or abrupt change continues to switch the system into coarse mode, picture elements immediately adjacent those coarsely described being updated at sending and receiving terminals by linear interpolation between those on either side. In a further modification if a new value lies nearer to the extremity of the previously sent fine range than would be defined by switching into coarse mode, then the corresponding extremity of the fine range is sent. Coarse quantization by itself can cause contouring in areas of low detail but rapid picture motion, which is undesirable. In an improvement this may be reduced partially by converting the contouring to a more random form by adding a "dither" waveform, e.g. a sine wave to the analogue signal before sampling and which may be an appreciable fraction of a coarse level. This is of particular advantage when used with a PAL or NTSC chrominance signal sampled at N/M times the sub-carrier frequency. In one arrangement N = 3, M = 1. Also with PAL/NTSC, the inputs to an interpolator can be selected to be three data inputs from current input to the coder so that the colour sub-carrier is always sampled at the same phase position. It should be arranged that the reference for the difference calculation is a combination of previous samples which has a high probability of being nearly equal to a current sample.
