Abstract

1412012 Portable bridges; bridge laying vehicles KLOCKNER-HUMBOLDT-DEUTZ AG 3 Nov 1972 [12 Nov 1971] 50863/72 Heading E1G In bridge-laying apparatus wherein a vehicle carrying a portable bridge is provided with mechanism for off-loading and projecting the bridge across a river or other obstacle from the near bank, the front end of the bridge releasably carries a pair of columns 2 which, if it fails to reach the far bank, are lowered by power means to rest on the bed of the river etc. whereafter, Fig 13 (not shown), the vehicle can be driven over the column-supported bridge to lay extension sections reaching the far bank. The near end of the bridge is bolted to an anchor plate 25, Fig 4-6 (not shown) driven into the ground by the laying vehicle. The anchor plate is also used to stabilise the vehicle during laying. Figs 1, 2 show one of a pair of columns 2 vertically displaceable in tubes 4 which are connected by a cross-beam 3 having a convex bearing surface 6 for the front 1 of the bridge. The cross beam 3 and bridge beam 5 are loosely pivoted together by removable bolts 7. A removable hydraulic ram 9 may be automatically controlled (e.g. by a mercury switch) to hold the column 2 vertical whatever the inclination of the bridge beams. The switch may subsequently be turned and used to control cross level. The column 2 has a series of apertures 16 engageable by pairs of hydraulically-actuated locking bolts 14, 15 respectively on the tube 4 and on a collar 12 supported on hydraulic rams 13, whereby the column 2 and tube 4 can "climb" relatively to each other by sequential hydraulic operation of the bolts 14, 15 and rams 13. The column 2 can also be lowered under gravity, the descent being controlled by a cable 18 on a winch 19 having a hydraulically-controlled brake band 20. The cable 18 may also be used, Fig 3 (not shown), in cooperation with the rams (13) to tilt the foot (11) and facilitate its extraction from the river bed when disassembling the bridge. In a modification, Figs 18-25 (not shown), the bridge-carrying vehicle is provided with a telescopic boom which is projected across the river etc. to serve as a temporary support on which the bridge is launched, both the boom and the bridge being provided with respective retractable front-end pillars (39, 43). The pillars are telescopic for height adjustment and are pivotally mounted so that they can be swung upwardly to or above the horizontale.g. during launching of the bridge.
