Abstract

1401318 Preventing drunken driving HONDA GIKEN KOGYO K K 24 Oct 1972 [27 Oct 1971] 49054/72 Heading G1N [Also in Division B7] Alcohol exhaled by a vehicle driver is detected by a device past which air from within the vehicle is drawn by a pump, the device preventing the vehicle being driven when alcohol is detected, e.g. by breaking the ignition circuit. The pump may be fitted with a pressure sensor which also prevents the vehicle being driven should the driver try to block the air intake. In Fig. 1 the pump 1 draws air from adjacent the steering wheel past alcohol detector 8 and pressure sensor 17. Dector 8, Fig.3, is a heated platinum wire fed from D.C.-A.C. converter 9; alcohol vapour burns on the wire, changing its temperature and its resistance. As the resistance changes the potential at tap 10a of potentiometer 10 varies, and transistor 12 is switched on. This operates relay 13 to illuminate warning light 15 and to disconnect ignition circuit 14. The pressure sensor is a diaphragm controlling switch 18. Relay 13 is self-holding, but may be reset by switching off ignition switch 19 when a sober person is to drive.
