Abstract

1398670 Ultrasonic heart-rate monitor F HOFFMANN-LA ROCHE & CO AG 16 Nov 1973 [8 Dec 1972] 53405/73 Heading H4D Ultrasonic Doppler apparatus for providing a one-per beat signal indicative of heart-rate includes filters 13, 14 actuable by a switch 15 to pass Doppler signals in one of two frequency bands, a resonant circuit 17 for de-emphasizing in the passed band frequencies other than that to which the resonant circuit is tuned and for providing an output indicative of heart-rate, a phase detector 23 responsive to any phase shift between the input and output signals of the resonant circuit to retune the resonant circuit slowly so as to track the frequency of the input signals to 17, a pulse generator 19 for inhibiting the action of phase detector 23 in intervals between input signals to 17, and a detector 16 responsive to selected values of heart-rate to actuate switch 15 and to change via switch 21 the pulse period of generator 19. The input to filters 13, 14 is derived by an AGC-amplifying, rectifying and smoothing arrangement 11, 12. Filters 13, 14 have Doppler pass bands corresponding to heart-rates of 30-120 and 30-150 beats per minute (b.p.m.) respectively and are switched into circuit when detector 16 receives from a heart-rate counter a signal (on line 32) indicative of a rate respectively below or above 100 b.p.m. It is stated that for foetal heart-rates below about 140 b.p.m., a Doppler pulse D3 (Fig. 1) occurs in addition to the pulses D2, D4 normally occurring. To prevent the heart-rate counter responding to D3, D4 and spurious noise, phase detector 23 is inhibited by the pulses from generator 19 which are switched to have a period of 100 or 350 ms. depending on whether the heart-rate is respectively above or below 140 b.p.m.
