Abstract

1395399 Filtering and coalescing element FAUDI-FEINBAU GmbH 26 May 1972 [26 May 1971] 24839/72 Heading B1D An annular, outward-flow filtering and coalescing element, for separating solids and water from jet fuel as it is pumped into an aircraft, comprises a perforate metal support tube 2 having inside it a pleated layer 4 comprising a non-woven material, a supporting tissue and one or two plies of glass fibre paper, and having outside it one or more layers 5 of felted synthetic fibres with relatively small pores and one or more layers 7 of felted natural, cellulose, synthetic and/or glass fibres with relatively large pores. Layers 7 may be enclosed by a layer of cotton 8 with metal threads therein, earthed to discharge static electricity, and an outer layer 9 with pores of 50-500 microns. Layers 5 and 7 may be in the form of windings of sheet material or seamed or seamless preformed tubes pushed onto tube 2. If layer 5 is wound it is enclosed by a helical winding 6 of woven glass fibre mesh which compresses the layer 5. If layer 5 is a tube it is formed of smaller diameter than tube 2 so as to be stretched in application. Fibre sizes of layers 5 and 7 are exemplified. The various layers are bonded to or moulded into annular end caps. In use a plurality of such elements in parallel filter out solids and coalesce water which is then retained by a downstream element of wire gauze coated with P.T.F.E.
