Abstract

1394125 Cold-cathode tubes RESOURCE CONTROL Inc 13 April 1972 [13 April 1971] 17162/72 Heading H1D [Also in Division H3] A method of generating high frequency oscillations comprises the steps of generating a plasma containing metastable atoms in a dielectric chamber, maintaining said plasma at a higher potential than ground and along a dielectric surface in said chamber, and maintaining a sufficient concentration of metastable atoms on said dielectric surface to cause an ionic current to flow thereon and thereby generating high frequency electric field pulses from inelastic collisions of said metastable atoms with charged particles on said dielectric surface. The waveform generated is stated to be sawtooth with transverse oscillations of a frequency of 10<SP>12</SP> to 10<SP>23</SP> p.p.s. superimposed on the rising portions of the sawteeth (Figs. 14 and 15, not shown). The chamber shown comprises two portions 11 and 12 separated by a dielectric wall 13. Semi-cylindrical electrodes 15, 16, 17 and 18 located adjacent the wall 13 are connected to leads 19, 20, 21 and 22. In operation a high voltage is applied to terminal 19. Terminals 20 and 21 are connected together through a resistor or other impedance, and terminal 22 is connected through a load to ground. The plasma may alternatively be created by radio-active emission or by high temperatures. Alternative forms of chamber (Figs. 2 to 9, not shown) comprise single or double prismatic or cylindrical configurations with two or four internal electrodes or with one or two internal electrodes and one or two external metal plates. Circuit arrangements for applying D.C. or A.C. excitation and various loads, including an electrostatic precipitator, to the different types of chamber are described (Figs. 10-13, not shown).
