Abstract

1390205 Fluorescent discharge lamps DUROTEST CORP 14 March 1972 [15 March 1971] 11916/72 Heading H1D In a process for manufacturing a fluorescent lamp, two cathodes 40 supported by two members 30 are activated remote from a phosphor coated envelope 62 and impurities liberated by the activation removed prior to sealing one member to each end of the envelope. The member 30 is an end cap having a groove 56 for receiving a shouldered down end portion 60 of the envelope 62, and bosses 32 and 34 surrounding leads 36 and 38 having slit ends in which the cathode filament 40 is crimped. The inner surface of the end cap may be coated with a heat-reflecting material. Alternative forms of end cap are described (Figs. 3 and 4, not shown) one form including an exhaust tubulation. As a further alternative, the cathode support member may be a conventional stem incorporating an exhaust tubulation (Fig. 5, not shown). A flow diagram of a complete process including cleaning, balsing, flushing and providing a filling of mercury and, e.g. argon at a pressure of 3 mm. Hg. is provided (Figs. 1, not shown).
