Abstract

1388381 Polymer dispersions IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 24 Jan 1972 [8 Feb 1971] 4121/71 Heading C3G Particles of synthetic film-forming polymer are dispersed in an inert organic liquid in which the polymer is insoluble, the organic liquid containing from 40-75% by weight of a solvent for the polymer and the solvent and non-solvent components of the organic liquid being miscible so as to form a single liquid phase. The dispersion of the polymer particles is stabilized by a polymeric stabilizer which comprises an anchoring component, which associates with the particles of disperse polymer, and a component which is solvated by the organic liquid and provides a stabilizing steric barrier around the particles, the stabilizer having been reacted chemically with the polymer particles to covalently link the stabilizer to the disperse polymer. The polymer dispersion is suitably prepared by polymerizing the monomer precursor(s) of the polymer in the organic liquid containing the polymeric stabilizer, the latter preferably being one containing ethylenically unsaturated bonds in the molecule whereby the disperse polymer formed is covalently bonded to the stabilizer by addition (graft) polymerization. The dispersions may additionally include pigments, non-volatile plasticizers, and polyester resins and are useful in coating applications. Examples illustrate dispersions of methyl methacrylate/n-butyl acrylate and methyl/ methacrylate/2-ethylhexyl acrylate copolymers, the polymeric stabilizer being the product obtained by (i) condensing poly-(12-hydroxystearic acid) with glycidyl methadrylate, (ii) copolymerizing the product with methyl methacrylate and glycidyl methacrylate and (iii) reacting the copolymer with methacrylic acid to introduce ethylenic unsaturation into the copolymer.
