Abstract

1387286 Editing CBS Inc 27 March 1972 14299/72 Heading G5R An editing system allows desired excerpts from a series of separately recorded video sequences to be "spliced together" by electronically switching between the sequences according to address code information. In the arrangement shown, video sequences from a camera 10 are address coded frame by frame at 14, 16, 18, and then stored in five recorders 22-30. An editor can then operate a light pen 46a and two associated devices 46b, 48 to energize a computer 40 to instruct a control unit 50 to operate any two selected recorders 22-30, and a switching network 56 allows the outputs therefrom to be simultaneously displayed on two monitors 58 70. The editor then reviews each sequence at normal speed or slow motion/still frame rates as required, and chooses edit points at which an excerpt from one sequence is to end and an excerpt from another sequence is to begin, the address codes corresponding to each edit point being noted and stored in the computer. A composite programme at normal speed with all the excerpts "spliced together" can then be produced by operating all the recorders 22-30 and using the stored edit point addresses to switch one excerpt after another on to a common display. Details concerning the "hunting" and "searching" operations carried out by the computer during the "splicing" are discussed with reference to Fig. 6 (not shown). By using a further recorder 31, an editor may make a copy of any sequence stored in the other recorders 22-30, whereupon two excerpts from different stages of the same sequence may be reviewed and joined together. A rapid access disc file system is described with reference to Figs. 5A, 5B (not shown).
