Abstract

1386645 Casting composite articles OUTOKUMPU OY 10 Oct 1972 [11 Oct 1971] 46696/72 Heading B3F A cooling element for a furnace is made by casting a metal, e.g. Cu, in a mould, thereafter immersing a prefabricated pipe in the molten metal so that the heat of the molten metal causes the outer surface of the pipe to melt, and thereafter allowing the molten metal to solidify. The pipe is cooled by passing a liquid or gas through it during the casting process. It may be provided with a layer of a metal of the same or different composition to that of the pipe on its outer surface prior to being contacted with the molten metal. This layer may be applied electrolytically, by dipping, hot spraying, soldering or by winding a metal thread around the pipe. To accommodate the expansion of the pipe, the mould may be provided with plates which guide any sliding movement of the pipe. The mould may be painted with a fine quartz sludge containing 2% of waterglass prior to the casting process. The pipe may be preheated prior to immersion in the molten metal.
