Abstract

1384988 Radar-actuated tensioning device for vehicle safety belt DAIMLER-BENZ AG 30 May 1973 [3 June 1972] 25669/73 Heading A3V A restraining device, such as a safety belt 14, for an occupant of a vehicle is provided with an actuating device 8 for putting the restraining device under tension, the actuating device being triggered when risk of a collision of the vehicle is imminent by means of a signal emitted by a proximity-measuring device I operating on the radar principle. The proximity-measuring device comprises a transmitting element 2 and receiving element 3 connected to a signal comparison device 4 which measures the time between transmission of a signal and the reception thereof after reflection from an object with which there is risk of collision. When such risk is detected a pulse generator 6 opens a control valve 7 to allow a pressure medium from a pressure accumulator 10 to displace a piston 15 against the force of a spring 16 in a cylinder 11, thereby to tension the belt 14. The tightening of the belt is automatically stopped on attainment of a belt tension which is still just tolerabe to the wearer, and/or the valve 7 is controlled in dependence on the strength or frequency of pulses so that the belt is tightened e.g. with increasing speed. When the risk of collision recedes a pump 9 assists the spring 16 in restoring the original tension. The actuating device may be hydraulically or pneumatically operating or an electromagnetic or mechanical system such as a stressed spring may be used.
