Abstract

1378494 Protective headgear DEFENCE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 8 Dec 1971 [10 Dec 1970] 58698/70 Heading A3V An article of protective headgear comprises a shell 1 and a piece of flexible gas permeable fabric spaced from the shell by tie members 5 to define a space 2 of approximately constant thickness which is occupied by expanded polystyrene spheroids 6 which are displaced relative to one another to allow the inner surface 4 of the fabric to conform to a wearer's head when the headgear is donned. The fabric is permeable by gas and liquid to provide ventilation and a pipe or pipes may be used to supply air to enhance the effect. In an alternative embodiment a plurality of bags are attached to the interior of the shell, each bag containing spheroids and optionally tie members, and the portions of the bag facing the interior of the headgear are of a gas permeable fabric and form the contact surface for the wearer's head. The sides of the bags opposite those forming the contact surface may be bonded to the inside of the shell 1 and a similar construction may be used in the Fig. 1 embodiment. The headgear comprises also earcups 7 and 8 having a pocket 9 for the ear surrounded by an annular pad 10 filled with polystyrene spheroids and telecommunications equipment may also be incorporated.
