Abstract

1375848 Intra-uterine contraceptive devices R GAUD 13 Dec 1971 [15 Dec 1970] 57868/71 Heading ASR An intra-uterine contraceptive device comprises two pairs of resilient curved stems 4 having free ends 5 folded back on themselves, a resilient loop-shaped stem 6, and a hollow tube 1 of elliptical or oval cross-section, having a widened sleeve 3 at its upper end and windows 2 in its side wall, the other ends of the paired stems 4 being housed in the upper end of the tube and the loop having an enlargement 7. The loop 6 may be joined to two of the stems 4, or may be housed in the tube 1. The enlargement 7 may be cylindrical or ellipsoidal, and may be provided with a groove. Spermicidal cream or jelly having a pH of between 4.5 and 5 may be provided in the hollow tube, and a tongue 8 may be provided on the tube for stitching the device to the neck of the uterus. The device may be made from plastics material such as a polyamide, a polyester, a polyfluoroalkylene, or a polyolefin. The device may be introduced into the uterus by means of a pusher made from polystyrene.
