Abstract

1373406 Vehicle bumpers REGIE NATIONALE DES USINES RENAULT and AUTOMOBILES PEUGEOT 28 Oct 1971 [2 Nov 1970] 50149/71 Heading B7J [Also in Division F2] An energy absorption device, mountable on the front, rear or side of a vehicle, comprises a bumper 1, Figs. 3, 4, secured to the surface of a fluid-tight flexible enclosure 3 which extends substantially over the length of the bumper, the enclosure 3 being mountable in a folded condition in a recess or compartment 4, e.g. in the front end 5 of a vehicle to be protected so that the bumper 1 then engages or is in close proximity to the front portion of the vehicle to permit manoeuvrability, the device including means 6 to inflate the enclosure as the bumper 1 is moved by known means into an operative extended position remote from the front of the vehicle and further means also included in the means 6 to maintain the internal pressure of the enclosure 3 at a constant value when the bumper strikes an obstacle. The means 6 comprises a set of valves for controlling the introduction of gas under pressure into, or out of the enclosure, in the case of a crash or when it is desired to restore the device to its inoperative position, Fig. 3. The bumper 1 is supported on rods 2 slidable in recesses in the vehicle body. The means 6 may be in the form of one or more gauged relief valves set for different operating pressures. Alternatively an orifice may be provided having a cross-section varying as a function of the internal pressure of the enclosure. In the embodiment of Figs. 5 and 6, the outer end of the enclosure is divided into compartments 8 by parallel partitions 7 each provided with a relief valve 9. The valves are gauged to different pressures increasing gradually from the foremost compartment to the rearmost compartment. According to another embodiment; Figs. 7 and 8 (not shown), complementary rupturable gas bags are provided in the enclosure 3.
