Abstract
1371145 Shock absorbing devices; vehicle bumpers REGIE NATIONALE DES USINES RENAULT and AUTOMOBILES PEUGEOT 26 Jan 1972 [28 Jan 1971 11 March 1971 23 March 1971] 3752/71 Headings B7J and B7B A device for absorbing impact forces between a vehicle and an obstacle and/or the vehicle interior and a passenger comprises inflatable bags 4 mounted externally or internally of the vehicle, and means for detecting an obstacle in the vehicle path, such means being adapted to extend from the vehicle in dependence on the speed thereof. In one embodiment, Fig. 2, electric switches 1 are carried by telescopic rods 2 which extend on increasing the vehicle speed, and which on contacting an object release the bag inflating means. In another embodiment, Fig. 6, a bumper 101 is carried by longitudinals, 102 having pistons 103 mounted in cylinders 104. Each cylinder has a pressure sensing device 117 and is supplied with fluid from an hydraulic pump 108 via a distributer 107 having a rotatable core 114. With the vehicle accelerating pump 108 supplies fluid via lines 106 to the cylinders and the bumper is extended; during deceleration the core 114 is reversed and fluid is supplied via lines 105 to retract the bumper. When bumper 101 strikes an object the pressure increase sensed at 117 triggers the inflation mechanism. In a further embodiment, Fig. 7, the bumper 122 is U-shaped and its limbs are connected to a cable 125 which passes over pulleys 126 and a pulley 128 driven by a motor 129 in one direction during vehicle acceleration and the other during deceleration. One limb of the bumper is of steel and passes, through an electromagnetic coil 130, so that when the bumper is suddenly retracted on collision the coil triggers the inflation mechanism. The inflatable bags may be enclosed by a net and have weakened blow out portions or relief valves to control the pressure therein during collision.
