1369537 Checking receipts; money &c deliverers OSTERTAG-WERKE AG 20 April 1972 [21 April 1971] 18481/72 Headings G4T G4V and G4X [Also in Division B6] Cheque accepting apparatus comprises means for receiving a cheque form and an identification card, means for checking for the presence of a predetermined correspondence between a security code read from the cheque and an account code read from the card, means for sensing a validity code applied to the cheque by a person using the apparatus and means for checking for the presence of a predetermined correspondence between the validity code and the security or account codes. Three embodiments are shown, in which the apparatus is associated with a cash dispenser, Fig. 4, a cheque dispenser (Fig. 3, not shown) and a keyboard or cash register (Fig. 5, not shown). The cheque form (Fig. 1, not shown) has the security code recorded in section (12), a bank code in section (10) and sections (14), (16) in which the user inserts the amount to be paid and his validity code. The identification card (Fig. 2, not shown) has magnetically recorded thereon the account code, a bank code, a total value code and a time limitation code. In the cash dispenser shown the card and cheque are inserted through slots 42, 44 where they are read by units 52, 56. A computer 62 checks the suitability of the bank total value and time limitation codes, the correspondence between the security, account and validity codes, and, by means of a storage medium 64, the status of the account. If the checking operation proves positive the cheque is transferred to a printer 82 where it is printed in machine readable type with the amount to be dispensed, read from section 14 of the cheque, and other information such as the account code, and is then passed to a deposit box 60. After the cheque is deposited issue control 80 operates banknote feeding and transporting apparatus 84, 88 to deliver the required amount to a table 90 and then operates door 74. The identification card is returned after updating of the information encoded thereon to reflect the transaction. The cheque form dispenser is similar in operation and includes a printer (68) for printing the new cheques to be dispensed to the user with the user's bank code, security code &c., this information being read from the inserted cheque and identification card. When associated with a cash register or the like the sum to be paid by cheque is fed in via keyboard (102), totalled if necessary by adder (104), and printed on an inserted cheque by printer (108). The cheque is then collected into the system and the identification card returned. The apparatus may be provided with means for examining the odour of a particular area of the cheque and checking for watermarks. The user may be provided with a stencil or copier for applying his validity code, or with a paper from which a layer, sensitive to ultraviolet light, may be transferred on to the cheque by exerting pressure. The algorithm for the security code and validity code may be encoded on the identification card.
