Abstract

1368095 Propelling ships O T F FILTNESS 26 May 1972 [11 Aug 1971] 37619/71 Heading B7V [Also in Division F1] A ship's propeller comprises a helical spiral blade 17, and means for coupling the smaller end of the blade to a shaft 16 for rotation therewith, an end of the blade being freely movable axially with respect to the shaft such that the blade may deform resiliently under axial thrust exerted by the water in which the blade is rotated. When the thrust exceeds a certain value, the blade is deformed resiliently and reduces its axial dimension, whereby the pitch of the propeller is reduced to reduce the flow rate. The edges of the blade may be sharpened to reduce turbulence. The blade is formed from an initially flat metal disc by cutting along a single spiral line or a pair of parallel or non-parallel spiral lines and then extending it axially.
