Abstract

1367487 Piezo-electric motors SIEMENS AG and BRAUN AG 9 Sept 1971 [11 Sept 1970] 42006/71 Heading H2A A motor for a dry shaver or small cosmetic apparatus includes a plurality of spaced, parallel piezo-electric elements 2 operable in the bending mode and arranged as a stack between a fixed part 4 of the motor and a component 1 which is to be linearly displaced two such stacks being provided which are adapted to oscillate in phase opposition. As shown, each element 2 of a stack comprises a metal or plastics material strip 5 sandwiched between a pair of piezo-electric strips 6 with electrodes on opposite faces thereof. The part 4 may consist of a number of individual clamping jaws between pairs of which the ends of the elements 2 are clamped. Alternatively the ends of the elements may be secured in recesses in part 4 by potting resin or they may be moulded in the part 4. In another embodiment, Fig. 4 (not shown), half of each element in the lengthwise direction is oppositely polarized or oppositely excited with respect to the other half so that in the bending mode, nodal points are produced half way along the elements. In this case the ends of the piezoelectric strips adjacent the component 1 are also secured thereto. The components carried by the stacks may be mounted in line or side by side.
