Abstract

1363147 Selective signalling A D L BLOISI 6 Aug 1971 37113/71 Heading G4H In a public opinion research system, a transmission line carries signals from answer devices different from its usual signals, to intermediate station(s) where they are filtered from it, added together and sent to a central station. The transmission line is part of the telephone network. The signals have a higher frequency than the normal telephone traffic, and are durationsignificant or frequency-significant A.C. bursts. In a first embodiment, a number of 1-out-of-4 indications, each entered on keys at a respective answer device and converted to the above form, are filtered from respective telephone lines at a telephone station, and decoded to a marking on 1-out-of-4 lines (one decoder per telephone line). The signals on corresponding outputs of the decoders are added in analogue fashion, the 4 results (each in the form of 3 analogue decimal digits) being digitized and sent to the central station where each of the 4 results is added to corresponding results from other telephone stations, to obtain the number of people giving each of the 4 possible answers, the results being displayed in percentage form. In a second embodiment, the information sent from each answer device is the position of a TV or radio channel tuner in A.C. form as before, together with a frequency indicating that the TV or radio receiver is on. The tuner information is decoded and added much as before, the percentage of switched-on receivers tuned to each channel being obtained at the central station with the aid of a signal representing the number of switched-on receivers obtained by summing the "receiver-on" indications at the telephone stations and then at the central station.
